Although the majority of car shoppers know the Honda Civic as one of the more reliable vehicles on the market—one that became a lot more stylish with its last redesign—few have heard of its more powerful hot hatch sibling, the Type R. There’s a reason for that. Until this year, it hasn’t been offered in the United States. That’s going to change this spring.
The 2017 Civic Type R debuted to the world in Geneva yesterday—and is soon slate to make its American entrance at the New York Auto Show next month—and it’s everything the enthusiast community hoped it would be. The looks alone are almost enough to give any racing fan heart palpitations.
Yet like with everything in life, it’s what’s inside that counts, and that’s where things get really interesting with the Civic Type R. Its engine is a 2.0-liter DOHC direct-injection turbocharged i-VTEC inline-four mated to a standard six-speed manual (no automatic will be offered). With 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque available from 2,500 RPM. Now that’ll get hearts racing.
Set to arrive in dealerships this spring, the Type R will undoubtedly be uncharted territory for many of our drivers. If you’d like to try it out, we’d love to hear from you! Contact our Honda dealership in Chattanooga, TN at your convenience, and we’ll schedule you for a test drive.
